When Tragedy Strikes

 by Macy Johnson

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.

In this world you will have trouble.

But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

(John 16:33 NIV)

What is a tragedy? What may be catastrophic for one person could be a walk in the park for another.

I recently mourned the sudden death of two friends. One was a fellow musician and the other a bridge partner. In one sense their deaths were tragic, but in another I rejoiced for them at the thought of seeing Jesus face-to-face!

Lucretia Berry wrote, “When we are at the end of a tragedy, we find it almost impossible to see that we may actually be in the middle of a trajectory between a dead end and a new life.”

We all have tragic times in our lives when we don’t know what to do. “Asking for help isn’t giving up. It’s refusing to give up,” wrote Charlie Mackesy.

I pulled into the parking lot of Advance Auto Parts one afternoon. My wipers needed to be replaced. I needed help. The young man cheerfully explained the problem and replaced them for me. Not a tragedy, but difficulty resolved. I remarked, “I noticed several customers in your store also bought wipers on this sunny day.” The young man commented, “Best time to get them is when you don’t need them.”

It made me think about how we need to be prepared for tough times ahead by being close to our Savior, strong in the faith He provides. When I face struggles, I know I will not be crushed or abandoned. With Jesus I will survive and bounce back from all that tries to pull me down.

I will be brave and trust my Heavenly Father in the good and bad times. I hope you will, too!
