Poldark

 by Macy Johnson

“Jesus did many other miraculous signs

in the presence of his disciples,

which are not recorded in this book.”

(John 20:30 NIV)

My husband, Jeff, and I enjoyed watching the “Poldark” series on Netflix. My favorite part of the program was the scenery. It is set on the ocean near Cornwall, England a few years after the American Revolutionary War. English author, Winston Graham, brought his saga of English history to life with his books written from 1945 to 2002.

After watching many episodes, I decided to read the books. I was thrilled with the ease of Graham’s writing style, although the British language was a bit tricky. Details and answers to questions I had from the TV series became clear and understandable through the written word. I read at a slower pace than the screen forced me to follow, and I pictured the characters moving through the plot again.

Although television gave me colorful visions of the story, the book provided more depth and understanding. Although England was at war with France during this story, the book reveals Ross Poldark’s lineage was French as a Poldarque, an interesting twist on the tale.

The book to screen comparison is a lot like the link between hearing God’s Word and reading it for myself. I can watch a thousand sermons over the internet or in person, but they can never compare to reading the Word and having the Holy Spirit speak directly to me. Many preachers can teach on the same verse, but only the Holy Spirit can make the Word of God come alive.

I wonder what Winston Graham’s motivation was to write the fictitious “Poldark” novels. I know why the Holy Spirit wrote the Bible. It is the only Truth.

I will study God’s Word to gain more of Him each day. I hope you will, too!
