Not What You Think

by Macy Johnson

“While they were listening to this,

He went on to tell them a parable,

because He was near Jerusalem

and the people thought that

the kingdom of God was going to appear at once.”

(Luke 19:11 NIV)

The Parable of the Ten Minas (Luke 19:11-27) is the last of Christ’s teachings in Luke before His Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. The mina, valued at approximately three months’ wages, is a metaphor for the Gospel. God has given each of us the good news of Jesus and we are responsible for how we invest it and share it with others.

Jesus said, “I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away.” (Luke 19:26) I dare not neglect or squander what I have been given. God knows my heart.

He uses the weak to shame the strong, the poor to shame the rich. His world is opposite the way of the world. Things are not as they may seem. God always reveals the Truth at just the right time, and in the best way.

Our son, Alex, watched as I drove my Tahoe down the driveway with our twenty-foot camper trailer in tow. He observed as I drove past the house, down to the water, and made a wide turn to pull the camper back up next to the house where I parked it.

He walked up to me and said, “So, that is how you park it? I thought you backed the camper into place.” I chuckled and replied, “You’re kidding, right? I never want to back this camper into any place. We always stay at pull-through campsites.”

I will strive to understand the mysterious power of the Gospel and use it daily for His glory. I hope you will, too!
