Nudges in the Night

by Macy Johnson

“I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?”
(Jeremiah 32:27 NIV)

One night not long ago I tossed and turned in bed. As I leaned over to take a sip of water, I glanced at the clock. Red numbers, large and bright enough for me to read, displayed 12:34.

I believe God speaks to me through numbers. So I silently answered back, “Cool, God! 1234! Are you reminding me that you are with me? Well, if so, then please do it again. Wake me at 1:23 and 4:56.”

Needless to say, I fell back asleep and slept soundly, deeply, until my eyes flew open at 1:23! Wow! I was thrilled! “Yes, you are with me!” I thought as I fell back asleep. And, you can guess it – I opened my eyes one more time that morning at 4:56.

I have not set a morning alarm in years, perhaps decades. God always wakes me at just the right moment, even when I need to roll out of bed at 3 am to catch an early morning flight. He has always been my on-time alarm.

Sometimes my heavenly Father wakes me in the night to bring something to my mind or suggest changes I should make. One morning He suggested I reevaluate one of my habits, because it was a problem to me. One night I squirmed under the covers until He planted a thought in my mind to get a blanket. I slept like a baby after that.

Some may think such minutia are coincidental. I believe they are testaments to my faith. How does God let you know He is with you?

I will rest in the arms of Jesus and be attentive to His nudges while asleep or awake. I hope you will, too!
