“Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light for my path.”
(Psalm 119:105 NIV)
I might be
on a slippery slope if I think I know the best way and am not willing to see
things from God’s perspective. I dare not shield my eyes from His Light.
Our
neighbor’s driveway is a steep downhill drop to their cabin at water level on
the lake. Over the years my husband and I watched cars and trucks slip and
slide up and down their driveway with squealing tires. The spectacle was more
prevalent during rainy, autumn days, when the cement was covered with wet
leaves.
One day
the driveway was demolished and fresh cement was poured. The new owners of the
property hoped to alleviate the problem with more traction for their
tires.
I traveled
to Peru many years ago to visit my Compassion child, Mario. As we rode in a bus
through the city of Lima to the school and church, I recited “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a
light for my path,”
in Spanish, several times and put it to a tune. I taught my new friends on the
bus to sing it with me. We were stepping into unchartered territory, on a
journey to meet our sponsored children. Language barriers and exotic
surroundings made everyone anxious. We knew we were on a slippery slope.
God often
brings me into new situations where I can flounder and fail, slide down and
fall, or dig in my feet, gain traction, and move forward into the unknown. My
only Hope is in Jesus, God’s living Word to me. He is my Lamp, the Light of my
path.
I will
cling to my Savior and trust Him to keep me safe on the slippery slopes. I hope
you will, too!
