Sing a New Song

by Macy Johnson
“And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders.”
(Revelation 14:3a NIV)

Sing new songs to celebrate new revelations of His glory.

“Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise from the ends of the earth.”
(Isaiah 42:10a NIV)

A little over thirty years ago I received a phone call from a dear friend who sang in the high school chorus with me.

John Jones announced, “I’ve put together a new singing group with several friends from school and would like you to accompany us.” Gigs were lined up and I enthusiastically accepted. We promptly prepared several pieces to perform, including John’s personal favorite, “I’ll Fly Away.” He made a special point to let everyone know it was his favorite gospel song.

My husband was watching “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” recently while I was constructing a thousand-piece puzzle nearby. Suddenly “I’ll Fly Away” filled the room with its mesmerizing melody. I paused for a moment and remembered Little John, as he was affectionately known. John may have been small in stature, but he had one of the largest, purest bass voices ever created.

Sadly, John Jones passed away in February of this year. A massive heart attack ushered him into the presence of his Lord and Savior. After lying for several days in a Pensacola hospital bed he finally did fly away! John’s earthly limitations are gone. He has a new name, a new voice, a new song.

I look forward to singing with John all the new songs he is learning in heaven right now. We miss your deep voice and big heart, Little John!

I will rejoice in all the new adventures, the new challenges I face today, invitations to sing a new song! I hope you will, too!
