Good Health

 by Macy Johnson

“Long life to you! Good health to you and your household!

And good health to all that is yours!”

(1 Samuel 25:6 NIV)

Long ago I created a spreadsheet, like a good accountant, for all my medications, medical procedures, diagnoses, vaccinations, and various reasons for visiting my physicians. I take this medical spreadsheet with me to every appointment, whether it be medical, vision, dental, or other.

The physicians and their assistants love my worksheet. They wish everyone would maintain and provide personal facts of their medical information. Client worksheets aid to enhance and complete details in their databases.

Updating my medical spreadsheet caused me to stop and wonder if I should start keeping track of my spiritual wellness. What would that worksheet look like?

-      For a list of medications, I would probably make a list of my daily Bible readings. Instead of Lipitor and Actonel, I would list Old and New Testament chapters, including Psalms and Proverbs read that day.

-      For a list of procedures, I might compare my baptism to my cataract surgery. Spiritual baptism clears and cleanses spiritual vision like the removal of cataracts clears physical vision. The numbers on my bone-density scan might be a reflection of the strength of my prayer life - how often I lift others up to Jesus.

-      As vaccinations protect my physical life, Bible verse memory protects my spiritual life. A healthy dose of verses repeated throughout the day help to fight off all diseases that attack our spirits.

Thankfully, there is no need for a spiritual spreadsheet. All of the items have already been checked off and the list destroyed through Jesus’ death and resurrection.

I will stay close to the Master Physician and trust Him to lead me on the path of good physical and spiritual health. I hope you will, too!
