“He will wipe every tear from their
eyes.
There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain,
for the old order of things has passed
away.”
(Revelation 21:4 NIV)
My
husband, Jeff, and I recently watched a documentary about a man who cannot feel
pain. His parents discovered his odd ability when he chewed off his tongue while
teething.
According
to the National Institute of Health: “Congenital insensitivity to pain is a
rare disorder. CIPA is an extremely dangerous condition.”
My husband
and I cruised on our new bikes for the second day from our campsite to the park
office. I forgot to put my foot down as the bicycle slowed in the grassy sand.
Down I went on my left side and felt something pop in my pelvis!
We camped
at the park two more days before we pulled our trailer four hours to the
hospital near my home. My pelvis was x-rayed and CAT-scanned. Two fractures
appeared as one-way tickets to a hospital stay. I was taught to manage the
sciatica-like pain in my left hip and leg and now have more compassion for others
who are injured.
Did God
think, “Who should I send to the hospital to bless my servants there?” Sitting
in the chair by my hospital window I wondered how this scene could be part of a
bigger picture. His own pain and death on the cross were about those He came to
save, not Himself.
I am
thankful to be able to feel pain. Our excruciating experiences help us to
function in this fallen world. My Lord promised one day I will know no more
pain. I welcome that day now more than ever!
I will
rejoice in the promise to be free of distress in the presence of my King. I
hope you will, too!
