“He said, ‘Throw your net on the right
side of the boat
and you will find some.’
When they did, they were unable to
haul the net in
because of the large number of fish.”
(John 21:6 NIV)
Our
daughter’s family came for a long weekend visit over the Easter and spring break
holidays. Saturday morning a new package of fish hooks blew off the dock into
the water, lost to the watery depths. The next day our granddaughter, Dahlia,
cast the fish net into the water to catch bait and pulled up the package of new
fish hooks! “You never know,” I said to my husband, Jeff.
Sunday
evening, after our company had left for Birmingham, Jeff and I sat on the dock
and watched as purple martins flew over the water. “Should I leave the poles
out tonight?” he asked. “We need to replenish our catfish supply.”
“Sure,
they should be okay,” I replied as we walked back up to the house for dinner
and a basketball game on YouTube TV.
Monday morning
came and Jeff checked on the left-behind fishing poles. One was missing, presumably
dragged off by a hooked fish. He blamed himself for not tying the pole more securely
to the dock. But many hours later while casting with another rod for the first
time that day, he snagged and retrieved the lost fishing rod and reel. “You
never know,” I repeated to Jeff.
Was God
reminding us that He cares about the little things we care about? You never
know what our heavenly Father will do next. Jesus told His disciples to cast
their nets when they had no hope. Jeff had no hope to retrieve the hooks or the
lost rod.
I will
trust the Holy Spirit to renew my hope in Him. I hope you will, too!
