“I
press on toward the goal to win the prize
for
which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
(Philippians
3:14 NIV)
My
husband, Jeff, and I watched the Southeastern Conference Championship football game.
The announcer declared, “Football is a game of momentum.” I pondered this
revelation.
Oxford
Languages defines
momentum as “the impetus gained by a moving object.” How can I press on to the
goal of a deeper relationship with my Heavenly Father?
Jonathan
Cahn wrote in his Book of Mysteries, “Make it your aim to become
consistent, continuous, and unwavering in your love and your holiness. This
will give you spiritual momentum.” The world watches as we move up and down the
field of life, pushing past obstacles, straining for the end zone to score
coveted points.
My life is
more like the disrupted starts-and-stops of a junior high football game. This
body may look like I have weathered storms with great momentum, but my spirit often
feels like I am sloshing through the mud still trying to get my feet set.
I cannot
love on my own. My own selfish desires get in the way and take the forefront in
my mind. More of God’s grace is needed. I dare not try to place the cart of
activities before the horse of grace. To gain momentum in my walk with Jesus,
I must practice the means of grace and let my behaviors follow.
John
Wesley, the founder of Methodism, said we receive favor with God through
prayer, scripture, communion, good works, and acts of mercy. Only with the
power of the Holy Spirit can I practice these ways consistently, continuously,
and steadfastly to gain momentum in love and holiness.
I will press
on to gain momentum and win the prize in my daily walk with Jesus. I hope you
will, too!
