“The Lord will guide you always;
He will satisfy your needs in a
sun-scorched land
and will strengthen your frame.
You will be like a well-watered
garden,
like a spring whose waters never fail.”
(Isaiah 58:11 NIV)
It is good
for me to abstain from events and things on a regular basis. Activities and
indulgences could grab me by the throat and not let go.
Jeff, my
husband, and I camp every month for three nights at Georgia state parks. I book
one year in advance to get the campground, site, and dates we want. Having a
reservation forces me to walk through a monthly camping routine. It also compels
me to postpone or cancel weekly commitments and escape from my home. Camping is
a spiritual retreat for me.
At the
campsite, I fast from all plans - visits to the grocery store, dinners out,
playing games with my friends, and other routines I enjoy while at home. My
calendar gets a break. Someone once asked me if I take my portable piano keyboard
camping with me. I do not because I need to fast from playing the piano.
We do not
take long, elaborate cruises or weeks’ vacations overseas. We do not camp across
state lines, but visit sites that are close to home. I maintain a spreadsheet
with lists, procedures, and notes from every camping trip. Before we return to
a campground, I review notes composed during former visits.
When we
return home and unpack our camping trailer, I begin a fast from camping. Being
away for a few days every month brings a new perspective on my days at home.
The ebb and flow of our camping life helps memories solidify in my heart.
I will fast and refrain from fasting as the Holy Spirit leads me. I hope you will, too!
