“The prudent see danger and take
refuge,
but the simple keep going and suffer
for it.”
(Proverbs 27:12 NIV)
I enjoy
watching college basketball games. I played basketball in school many years ago,
but practicing the piano took preference over other activities.
March
Madness has opened a whole new world for me. I printed brackets for Jeff, my
husband, and I to follow and fill in as tournaments progressed. My favorite basketball
team to follow is Auburn University's. Since we contributed many dollars for our
children’s tuitions at Auburn, it claims a special place in my heart.
I am
thrilled when a basketball player successfully completes a three-point field
goal from beyond the three-point line. The TV commentators say “he stepped
back” when a teammate moves into position to shoot the basketball into the hoop
from a distance. I am fascinated when the shooter actually steps back to gain
an advantaged position before letting the ball fly.
“The game
of basketball reminds me of a choreographed dance routine on a ballroom floor,”
I once told Jeff. He agreed. Players move in sync one-on-one to snatch the ball
or block the player who has the ball.
While I
watch basketball games I can learn several lessons to apply to my spiritual
life:
- Step back and observe what is going on
around you before releasing the ball
- Don’t push yourself into the picture
(dribble-drive), unless the lane is clear
- Slow down and assess the situation
before moving forward
- Take a breath and silent prayer before
releasing your “free throw”
- Give God the glory when points are
earned and a game is won
I will step
back and observe how my heavenly Father puts all pieces perfectly in place to
touch the hearts and minds of those around me. I hope you will, too!
