“But whoever drinks the water I give
him will never thirst.
Indeed, the water I give him will
become in him
a spring of water welling up to
eternal life.”
(John 4:14 NIV)
I imagined
my day to be like a glass filled with ice cubes. The activities ahead were those
cubes – touching each other and somehow connected. I imagined the Holy Spirit was
the cool, clear, clean water poured over the ice. Slowly throughout the day,
the ice cubes melted and became one with the water.
His love
melted all of the hard coldness of every activity and person in my day until it
was all just about Him. Impurities floated to the top, spooned out like flakes
of dust. The sweetness of the pure, refreshing water diluted all bitterness in
the ice.
Some days
my glass overflows with many ice cubes. And there are days when only the water
of the Holy Spirit fills my time. I like to plan days with events, but often I
sense the Holy Spirit telling me to slow down and remove some of the day’s undertakings.
It can be painful and cold to reach into the glass and remove cubes of ice.
I recently
participated in my annual hearing evaluation. Listening for blips and beeps was
disturbing. My doctor gently reminded me when I am tempted to withdraw from
activities because of hearing loss, I will want a device for assistance. I dare
not let anything keep me from being connected with those Jesus wants me to serve.
So, for
now I will choose to fill my glass with ice cubes of activities and enjoy the
filling of the Holy Spirit as my hours melt into His will.
I will walk
through my days and enjoy the Holy Spirit’s presence mingled in the moments. I
hope you will, too!
