“Wait for the Lord;
be strong and take heart
and wait for the Lord.”
(Psalm 27:14 NIV)
A former
boss once asked me, “Do you know how to eat an elephant?” I shook my head. He responded,
“One bite at a time.”
That long-ago
conversation popped into my mind recently. Volunteer responsibilities knocked
on my door and forced me to try new things. I froze in fear. I did not want to
learn new processes, but I sensed the Holy Spirit nudging me to boldly move
forward.
My
heavenly Father sent a new friend to help me. She did not want the responsibility
of gift shop manager, but would be my assistant. She would search the internet
for items to purchase after I set up accounts with vendors. We agreed I would review
her carts and place the orders. One bite at a time, I walked through the
processes and completed the tasks.
My
church’s retiring Treasurer and I sat down at her computer and got to work. She
walked me through her processes and I recorded every step. My auditor hat floated
down on my head and my hands welcomed the documentation process of years gone
by. It felt like an old friend had returned to guide me.
Obstacles
and questions made progress slow. Stops and starts abounded. I had to wait on
God’s perfect timing in each situation. Every step, every bite taught me
something new. Digestion seemed labored but steady. I felt a new strength in
confidence earned.
Did I
mention my former boss was an Auburn University graduate? I have often wondered
if his reference to elephants was somehow connected to the mascot of his alma
mater’s rival, the University of Alabama. Yes, Grady, one bite at a time!
I will
enjoy all feasts of elephants with my Savior. I hope you will, too!
