“How great are your works, O Lord,
how profound your thoughts!”
(Psalm 92:5 NIV)
Lake
Martin Community Church was located about a mile from the lake’s dam in the
village of Red Hill, Alabama. It was on the same street as the cabin we rented
from 1999 to 2002. We spent every weekend there. I was the church pianist at
LMCC and as active as a part-timer could be while living and working in
Birmingham.
One of the
members had a beautiful bass voice and sang like an angel. His very favorite
hymn was How Great Thou Art. His happy place was on his pontoon boat in
the middle of the lake where he could sing this hymn of praise as loud as he
wanted.
Every time
I play or sing How Great Thou Art I recall this gentleman. He was a
senior citizen twenty years ago, so I wonder if he is still singing on earth,
or has graduated to eternity. I’ve forgotten his name, but Jesus hasn’t.
Think back
on people who have influenced you in one way or another, pointing you to your
Creator, God. This man was just one who had an impact on me and many who were
amazed by his strong faith and musical talents. If I could talk to him now, he most
likely wouldn’t remember me and of course humbly scoff my glowing memories of
him.
We will
never know who is watching us, who will be influenced by our presence, words,
or music. Only God sees and knows the big picture. He brings people into our
lives, sometimes only for a split-second, to point us to Him. And He moves us
into the lives of others for His eternal purposes.
I will be available and willing to show others today how great my God is. I hope you will, too!
