“Therefore
keep watch,
because
you do not know on what day your Lord will come.”
(Matthew
24:42 NIV)
My husband, Jeff, and I recently
watched “The Tomorrow War” on Amazon Prime Video. Young soldiers suddenly appeared
from thirty years into the future to ask their parents to help them fight a war
against alien invaders. Citizens, destined to die before the war even began,
were drafted and sent into battle with weapons and minimal combat training. It
was a doomed endeavor.
As I watched the movie I thought about
Jesus. He came when people of earth were not expecting Him. He came from the
future, the past, all time, to warn them of God’s coming wrath and provide hope
in the midst of despair. He taught them to expect His return.
What would you do if a young child you
are close to appeared today at your door from the future and pleaded, “Will you
come help me?” Would you be willing to drop everything, like in the movie, and
fight a hopeless war?
What would you do if Jesus appeared today
at your door and asked, “Are you ready?” Oswald Chambers wrote, “Expect God to
come, but do not expect Him only in a certain way.” Isn’t that exactly what
Jesus taught? Just like the flood came and washed away parties, graduations,
weddings, TV-watching (well, maybe not) in Noah’s time, Jesus’ return will come
when we least expect it. Smile, you’re on God’s camera!
What do you need to do in order to be
ready to meet Jesus? Live each day in humble repentance. Turn from the past and start fresh in
a new direction of righteousness. Keep your eyes on the prize – Jesus coming in
the clouds.
I will keep
watch and be ready when Jesus comes to take us home. I hope you will, too!
