“My heart says of you, ‘Seek his face!’
Your face, Lord, I will seek.”
(Psalm 27:8 NIV)
Someone remarked
that every time they thought of Moses, they pictured Charlton Heston. As the
star of the 1956 film, The Ten Commandments, his face was solidified in
the minds of moviegoers. Jonathan Roumie of The Chosen series has provided
viewers with a face to put with Jesus. Jonathan recalled in a documentary how
he is often stopped on the street by people who request prayer for their needs.
They feel a connection to God through Jonathan.
My husband
and I watched several television episodes about a wildlife game warden
detective. I checked out the first book from the author’s series from my local
library and realized my imagination is tainted with a vision of what the hero
looks like. It is difficult to picture a different face than what was depicted
on a TV screen.
I do not
know what the human face of Jesus looked like. Many artists over the years have
tried to uncover the secret. Is it important to know what my Savior looked like
on earth? How can I seek His face, if I do not know what to look for?
Adam
Clarke’s commentary (published in 1825), paraphrased Psalm 27, verse 8: “The
yearning strong desire of my heart, which speaks of God, and He alone hears; my
face is to Thee; that is, myself sought Thee lastingly, till my death; and till
I find what I seek.”
I do not
need to know what God’s face looks like to seek His presence. My heart knows
His heart as He reveals Himself to me, not necessarily to my eyes, but to my
soul.
I will
seek His face in everything and everyone today. I hope you will, too!
