“So whether you eat or drink or
whatever you do,
do it all for the glory of God.”
(1 Corinthians 10:31 NIV)
One of my
favorite songs from the late 1980’s is Michael Card’s “Joy in the Journey.”
There is a joy in the journey
There’s a light we can love on the way
There is a wonder and wildness to life
And freedom for those who obey
I talked
with my daughter this past weekend about her journey, her transfer from North
Carolina back to her home state of Alabama. Libby missed the laid-back customs
of Asheville, but looked forward to embracing the dressed-up culture of
Birmingham. We discussed how different types of people thrive in different
locations. It is fun to slide into a new home and enjoy the journey there.
My son has
discovered a new path in Nashville, Tennessee. Twists and turns of a job
promotion, new friends, and fresh hopes and dreams are shaping an epic adventure
for him. I bathe my children and grandchildren in daily prayers.
My immediate
family’s relocations from Florida’s panhandle to Birmingham and then to Georgia
have brought joys unspeakable. My husband and I sometimes wonder what life
would have been like if we had ignored the calls to pack up and move on. Like others
we sometimes wonder, “What if?”
Even if we
sit at home and do nothing all day, we are still on a journey. Time pulls us
along into change, whether we like it or not and how we spend the time we’re
given has eternal impact. Where our Creator leads us was planned before we were
born. He has laid out our paths, and His Spirit nudges us to move along with
Him, step by step.
I will seek
joy in the journey my Lord unveils today. I hope you will, too!
