“There is no wisdom, no insight, no
plan
that can succeed against the Lord.”
(Proverbs 21:30 NIV)
It was time
again to cash a check so my husband, Jeff, would have bills in his wallet. I
wrote a check for $100 and attached a post-it note to it that read, “May I
please have five twenties?” As I drove to the bank’s drive-through I considered
asking for a few five-dollar bills to hand out to anyone in need, but didn’t alter
my request. I received the envelope from the teller, stuck it in my purse, and
forgot about it.
The next
morning, I opened the bank envelope to discover 3 twenty-dollar bills and 8
five-dollar bills! Apparently the teller did not clearly understand my request.
Maybe she saw the words “five” and “twenties” and with the nudge of the Spirit,
filled my unwritten wish. I believe God places secret desires in our hearts only
He can fill. He put the suggestion for five-dollar bills in my spirit and
fulfilled it in spite of my note to the bank cashier.
I jumped
up from my desk, hurried downstairs, took the bills to my husband and excitedly
explained my story. Jeff’s initial reaction was I had miscommunicated my simple
wish by writing out the word “five.” Then we decided it was a God thing – our
heavenly Father trumped my request.
Have you
ever asked for something without clearly specifying the details desired, only
to receive it better than you could have asked? Have you ever asked for
something in an obscure way that was misunderstood and yet something better was
given? Was it miscommunication? Could it be the Holy Spirit at work?
I will watch my Lord reveal Himself in my desires and the needs of those around me. I hope you will, too!
