“In that day men will look to their
Maker
and turn their eyes to the Holy One of
Israel.”
(Isaiah 17:7 NIV)
My
husband, Jeff, and I watched a documentary about Terry Kath, a gifted musician
and an original founder of the musical group Chicago. His daughter,
Michelle, interviewed many who knew Terry. He tragically died in a handgun
accident when his daughter was very young.
The
interviewees all commented on how much Michelle looked like her father,
especially in her eyes. The resemblance helped to trigger long hidden memories
of Terry. Old men wept as they remembered their talented friend.
As an
adoptee, I discovered my biological father’s identity through Ancestry.com. I
recently was united with one of my half-brothers, Bill. He and his wife met Jeff
and I for dinner in Abbeville, Alabama one evening.
Bill was
born when I was eight years old. He shared pictures and stories of our father
that kept us in stitches. I would never have guessed my little half-brother
would be well over six feet tall and a Harley-Davidson enthusiast.
Bill was
amazed at how much I reminded him of our father’s mother, Georgia. She was an
excellent cook – that gene must have slipped past me. From the many pictures
Bill showed me, I noticed how our four sets of eyes and noses (mine, Bill’s,
our father’s, and our grandmother’s) were alike. Our Polish grandmother passed
down strong physical characteristics to her son and his children.
My
heavenly Father passed down many spiritual traits to me. The one quality I want
to be the most evident is His eyes. I want my Father’s eyes, so everyone who
looks into my eyes will see Him and not me.
I will seek opportunities to serve others in love so they will see Jesus in me. I hope you will, too!
