On My Toes

“As the toes were partly iron and partly clay,

so this kingdom will be

partly strong and partly brittle.”

Jeff, my husband, and I relaxed in our rocking chairs on the porch early one Saturday morning. Storms had passed in the night and water dripped from the trees in a pitter-pat rhythm. Hummingbirds flitted around the lantana and salvia bushes, back and forth, to and from our feeders full of nectar.

 

We discussed our plans for the day. Our son and his friends arrived in the night and were sleeping late in our cabin. Jeff and I sat quietly and enjoyed the lake view and morning peace.

 

Suddenly a whirring like the sound of a tiny lawnmower approached me from the right, under our porch swing. I glanced down at my foot as a hummingbird deftly landed on the tip of my sandal and touched his long beak to the hot pink polish on my toenail. Disappointed, he quickly flew away.

 

“That was different,” I commented to Jeff. No time to take a photo, so I’ll have to remember the scene in my mind. How often God brings surprises out of the blue to remind me that life is magical. He keeps me “on my toes” by sometimes bringing a little friend to sit on my toe. Maybe it is appropriate that when I passed by my husband as I left my rocking chair, I accidentally stepped on his toe!

 

In Daniel’s vision of the Roman Empire, represented by feet of iron and clay, it was predicted the God of heaven would set up a kingdom that will never end. The kingdom of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, is eternal, as strong as ever today. He keeps me on my toes.

 

I will be alert and ready for service in His kingdom. I hope you will, too!
