“Even the sparrow has found a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may have her young -
a place near your altar,
O Lord Almighty, my King and my God.”
(Psalm 84:3 NIV)
Annette pulled me aside after a game of Mexican Train Dominoes. “Would you like to learn how to play Mahjong? One of our friends is an instructor and we might enjoy it,” she explained. “Sure, why not?” I replied.
According
to themahjongline.com, “American Mahjong is a distinct version of the original
Chinese game with its own set of rules. It also has a diverse history of
experimentation and change led by groups including Chinese Americans, Air Force
Officers' wives, and Jewish American suburban mothers. People from China were
playing mahjong in the U.S. as early as the 19th century.”
The word mahjong
comes from the Chinese word for sparrow, inspired by the clicking sound of the
tiles when they are shuffled, sounding like sparrow birds chattering.
After
several lessons with Beth, I was hooked, and so was my friend, Annette. I
wanted to know everything I could about the game and the culture. It has been a
humbling process. Friends get a chuckle when they witness my frustration at not
winning every hand. I sometimes pout, want to pick up my card and walk away.
My
heavenly Father reveals Himself to me in all aspects of my life. He nudges me
on in the struggles and cheers me through the successes. I know He leads me to
spend time with friends, especially to play games like Mahjong, Bridge, and
Dominoes. I am thankful He introduced me to a new game, several new friends,
and new ways of serving in His kingdom. I look forward to all new adventures
ahead.
I will take Jesus with me wherever He leads. I hope you will, too!
