“Drink water from your own cistern,
running water from your own well.”
(Proverbs 5:15 NIV)
We live on
top of an abundant water supply, next to one of Georgia’s beautiful lakes. Our
cabin was built in the 1980’s with a bored well. When we purchased the property
in 2014, we were required to install an ultraviolet light to kill waterborne pathogens.
Otherwise we might have microbial contamination. The bored well was 30 feet
deep.
In 2016,
before we started construction on our semi-attached house, we decided to have a
new well drilled. It reaches over 100 feet below the surface and produces many
gals of sweet and pure and super-cold water per minute. No more ultraviolet-light
gadgets and bulky contraptions. My husband flushes out a minimal amount of
sediment from the filter on the well’s head every six months.
What a
difference the depths of the two wells makes! It causes me to think of the well
of water that Jesus offers. Poor pitiful me has been drinking from the old, bored,
spiritual well for too long. I have relied on the murky, filtered version of
the Holy Spirit through the teachings of others. I have trusted the ultraviolet
lights of “experts” to decontaminate my spiritual nourishment. I have not always
gone directly to the Source of all life.
“For the Lamb at the center of the
throne will be their Shepherd;
He will lead them to springs of living
water.”
(Revelation 7:17 NIV)
Jesus
calls me to cover up the bored wells in my life and drink only from the deepest
drilled well – His Spirit. I must go to the Source, the Bible, the Word of God
for all Truth.
I will
drink and be filled from the well of living water, the Holy Spirit, today. I
hope you will, too!
