“Praise Him for His acts of power;
praise Him for His surpassing greatness.”
(Psalm 150:2 NIV)
During
choir practice we rehearsed a new song written about Psalm 150. The keyboard accompaniment
for the choir was sketchy, with just a few chords and minimal chord changes. I
prefer to play only published notations, but soon realized what was written was
boring and mundane. The director felt the same way, so she asked me to fill in
the blanks and play more notes.
“You want
more notes? You’ve got it!” I replied. “We could use a bass guitar for support,”
I added.
Several
Sundays following that rehearsal, we sang “Psalm 150” as the anthem during
worship. The assistant pastor backed up the choir on his bass guitar while I
more than doubled the piano notes on the page. The piece came vibrantly alive
and encouraged worship in everyone’s heart.
Hurricane
Helene pressed down on us. The ground was dry and rain was badly needed, but more
drops of water fell than I wanted. I tried to fall asleep as the rain pelted my
bedroom window and thought, “Where is all this water coming from?” It traveled
to my home from the Gulf of Mexico and even the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic
Ocean.
Sometimes
I think I get along just fine with the way things are. Then the Holy Spirit
wakes me up with more notes and more drops of water than I think is necessary.
He stirs the mundane in my life and potentially makes what I think is a mess. I
ponder such times and trust my heavenly Father knows when to turn on the faucet
of music and/or water and when to shut it down.
I pray
that others will experience the Holy Spirit today and delight in His perhaps
unwelcome abundance. I hope you will, too!
