Contagious Cure

“Some people brought to him a man

who was deaf and could hardly talk,

and they begged him to place his hand on the man.”

My husband, Jeff, and I enjoyed watching The Last Ship on Netflix. It is based on a novel written by William Brinkley in 1988. An American Navy ship carried the scientist who discovered the cure for the Red Flu which had infected and killed most of the world’s population.

 

In one of the episodes, the scientist discovered a way to make the cure contagious. The ship landed on the shores of several infected countries. When the ship’s crew embraced the ill, the sick people felt better, and hope for life returned to the community.

 

As I watched the story unfold, the Holy Spirit showed me Jesus in the actors. Although the situations are similar, the touch of Jesus is far more powerful than any medical cure. Love is the contagious cure for all human illness. We are His instruments of healing. All miracles begin with the touch of the love of God.

 

I recently read a devotional about a woman who visited her uncle in the Alzheimer’s care unit of a nursing home. She was approached by a mentally disabled stranger who reached for her hand. The unknown woman led her through the facility, hungry for the visitor’s touch. The writer finally pulled away from the stranger to visit her uncle down the hall. Over time, she welcomed this form of communication with the stranger and they became friends.

 

In the times of Jesus, people knew what His touch would do. When the love of God touches anything, it drastically transforms it into something new and better. Whatever Jesus touched was changed.

 

I will ask Jesus to use me to touch others with his contagious cure of unconditional love. I hope you will, too!
